James Steven Burkhart, M.D.
Dr. James Steven Burkhart, who is known to all as ‘Steve’, was born in Iowa but grew up outside of Rochester in Hilton, New York. He is a graduate of Michigan’s Alma College (1978) and obtained his Medical Degree, as well as a Master of Surgery degree, from McGill University (1982) in Montreal, Canada. He completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Rochester (1986) and stayed in Rochester to practice his specialty. In 1989 he helped found Genesee Valley Ob-Gyn with Dr. Ted Ruckert.
Dr. Burkhart has maintained a full time practice with his partners at their main office in the Physicians’s Office Building on the Highland campus and at peripheral offices in Penfield and Clifton Springs. Dr. Burkhart was board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1988 and has maintained this certification over the course of his professional practice by recertification exams. He is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Burkhart has an interest in teaching medical students and residents and has won the URMC Ob-Gyn Resident’s Teaching Award twice in his career.
Dr. Burkhart has served the Highland Hospital medical staff first as Treasurer and then as Vice- President over the last four years. He is the current Highland Hospital Medical Staff President serving a two year term through the end of 2013.
Dr. Burkhart has four children, Mark, Christian, Virginia and Olivia and is married to fellow Highland Hospital Ob-Gyn, Dr. Oona Lim.
